Business & Commercial Insurance Information
What is Original Medicare?
Original Medicare consists of two parts. Part A and Part B.
Part A covers your hospital costs minus a deductible and 20% coinsurance.
Part B covers your doctors and outpatient costs minus a deductible and coinsurance.
Original Medicare does not cover prescription drugs.
* Because of the out of pocket cost risk with Original Medicare, you will want to obtain either a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage plan, along with a prescription drug plan.
A Medicare Supplement is an insurance policy that will run secondary to Original Medicare. These are offered through private insurance companies and will have a premium that varies based on age, zip code, and plan coverage level desired. Medicare Supplements do not include prescription drug coverage, so you will want to select a stand alone drug plan in addition to your supplement.
Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)
Part D coverage can be obtained as a stand alone policy, or it can be obtained through your Medicare Advantage plan. It is optional to purchase a Part D plan, however, if you decide not to purchase a part D plan when first eligible, you may be subject to a fine of 1% of the national average cost of prescription or Part D plan for each month that you were not enrolled. This late enrollment penalty will have to be paid for the remainder of the time that you are on Medicare. The exception to this would be if you were enrolled in creditable prescription drug coverage the entire time after becoming eligible.
Medicare Advantage plans are plans that are Medicare or CMS approved plans that are offered through private insurance companies. These are plans that include Original Medicare and all medical deductibles and contains networks that generally include copays and coinsurance. Medicare Advantage plans must include all of the
benefits that are offered through Original Medicare and often include other benefits that may not be included in Original Medicare. These plans will generally includeTh prescription drug coverage coverage.
